Between May 3-8, 2026, representatives of the Faculty of Geo-Data Science, Geodesy, and Environmental Engineering at AGH University of Krakow, namely Dr. Artur Guzy and Dr. Wojciech Witkowski, participated in the #EGU26 General Assembly 2026 in Vienna, Austria, one of the world’s largest conferences dedicated to Earth sciences.
During the conference, Dr. Guzy and Dr. Witkowski presented the results of research on the development of sinkhole processes in flooded, abandoned mines. The study was presented as the poster: “Drivers and spatio-temporal characteristics of land movements associated with sinkhole formation in flooded, abandoned mines” co-authored by Artur Guzy, Magdalena Łucka, Sebastian Walczak, Xingyu Zhang, and Wojciech Witkowski.
Dr. Guzy also presented research on land subsidence in deltaic areas, based on the poster: “Vertical and horizontal land motion in the Mekong Delta: A long-term record from dual-geometry Sentinel-1 InSAR” co-authored by Sebastian Walczak, Artur Guzy, Wojciech Witkowski, Magdalena Łucka, Pietro Teatini, Selena Baldan, Katharina Seeger, and Philip J.S. Minderhoud.
In addition, Dr. Guzy co-convened the scientific session: “Natural and human-induced geohazards: advanced SAR/InSAR, geodetic and remote sensing frameworks grounded with in-situ data through AI and physics-based modelling.” The session was co-organized together with Lin Shen from Columbia University, USA; Ava Osman Pour from Bu-Ali Sina University, Iran; Mimmo Palano from the University of Palermo, Italy; Claudia Zoccarato from the University of Padova, Italy; and Jin Fang from the University of Leeds, UK.
Participation in the conference provided an excellent opportunity to connect and reconnect with international researchers working on various aspects of land subsidence and geohazards worldwide.
The research presented at the conference was carried out as part of scientific projects funded by the National Science Centre, Poland:
“3MAP: Monitoring, Modelling and Mitigation of land subsidence in delta areas”, led by Dr. Artur Guzy, and “Novel algorithm of sinkhole precursors detection”, led by Dr. Wojciech Witkowski. #EGU26 #EGUGeneralAssembly #AGHUniversity #EarthSciences #InSAR #RemoteSensing #LandSubsidence #Geohazards #Sinkholes #MekongDelta #NationalScienceCentre
